Ashley’s Story

In the early hours of Thanksgiving Day tragedy struck in Woodstock, GA when an electrical fire took over Julie Curtin’s New Vintage Farm. The fire consumed the barn, taking 18 lives: 15 horses – including prized hunters, rodeo champions, and young babies who hadn’t yet started their careers. Among the perished was also the two companion miniature donkeys and the barn chihuahua. Twenty-three horses miraculously escaped the fire with the help of the farm’s heroic grooms who went back into the fire until they couldn’t breathe anymore.

One of Gatsby’s precious offspring was among the survivors, but unfortunately did not escape unharmed. After getting out of her stall in the fury of it all, she banged her knee hard on an unknown object, obtaining a puncture wound and a chipped bone on the top of her left knee joint. She has had a rough experience and is on her second week in a veterinary clinic; the treatment used to protect her knee joint against infection in turn gave her a terrible case of colitis. On Saturday December 6th she almost lost her fight again when she became terribly dehydrated with PCV levels of 70. Doctors have been working around the clock to restore hydration and get her colitis under control.

Born severely premature and with dummy foal syndrome, this mare has an unmatched fight and desire to live. After spending her first three weeks of life in an ICU unit where she fought to live and survived a bladder rupture, she was raised an orphan foal by her amateur owner. This filly went on to take everyone by surprise. She competed on the line during her yearling year and took the 6th place ribbon in the Hunter Breeding National Championships.

This has been an extremely taxing journey not only for this 3 year old filly, who has had to endure more hardship than most mature horses three or four times her age, but it has also posed some extraordinary challenges for her amateur owner, who has been by her side during every second of the struggle.

One of the many wonderful qualities Gatsby is known for is passing onto his kids his huge heart and amazing spirit. He has been very clear in his desire to do whatever is in his power to help out in this situation. So it is with Gatsby’s heart and spirit that we are offering a very special gift both to the horse community and to a wonderful horse, Olivia.
